The 2017-18 season marks the culmination of our four-year survey of Mendelssohn and Wolf. Highlights include Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, op. 66, and Wolf Spanisches Liederbuch, as well as works by Fanny Mendelssohn, performed by members of the Emmanuel Music ensemble.

Composed in an astonishing eight weeks in the fall of 1889, the 44 songs of the Shoes Dress Strap Handcrafted Monk Men Stylish Leather Spanisches Liederbuch initiate a change of style in Hugo Wolf’s lieder writing. He had already set the poems of the poets of the past with only the highest pedigree such as Mörike, Eichendorff and Goethe. With great interest and boundless passion for the Spanish arts, he sought to find good translations of Spanish poetry to set. A friend told him about the Geibel and Heyse translations of the Spanisches Liederbuch.

The opening ten songs of the Spanisches Liederbuch are sacred (Geistliche Lieder) with the first six centering on the Virgin and the life of the Holy Family; the final four dealing with pathological remorse. The secular songs of the Spanisches Liederbuch (Weltliche Lieder) are free from the morbidity that had characterized the sacred Lieder, and concentrate instead on the pain and rapture of erotic love.
Some of the songs are clearly Influenced by the Spanish flavor of habaneras, cubanitas and madrileñas with guitar, mandolin and tamborine accompaniment. However, Wolf mostly makes no attempt at Spanish authenticity, rather his focus is on that of the mood and ideas expressed in the poetry.

Mendelssohn's Concert Piece for Clarinet, Basset Horn & Piano in f minor, written for Heinrich and Carl Baermann, is a light-hearted and charming conversation in similar style to a Rossini operatic duet. Mendelssohn's Leather Dress Monk Strap Shoes Men Stylish Handcrafted Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major,written for Paul, his brother, quotes "Es ist vollbracht" from Bach's St. John Passion, and the final movement is based on Mendelssohn's own "Spinning Song", heard later in the concert in his Lieder ohne Worte. Wolf's Handcrafted Strap Shoes Stylish Dress Men Leather Monk Eichendorff Lieder are Schumanesque, often recalling the character of well-known Schumann settings. Commenting on his own settings of the great German romantic lyricist Eichendorff, Wolf wrote: "the romantic element in the Eichendorff songs almost completely recedes in favor of the relatively unknown roguishly humorous and robustly sensual side of the poet". Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte is book 6 of 8 that provides an essential snapshot of the supremecy of melody and the Romantic era's preoccupation with poetry.

Hensel's Eichendorff Lieder were unpublished during her lifetime, however her writing was on par with her brother's. Music critic Ludwig Rellstab wrote that Hensel "had achieved a level of musical knowledge which few other artists who have dedicated their lives to music could claim." Compare Hensel's romantic style composition to the humoresque and character portrayals of Hugo Wolf to the same poet. This concert concludes with Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66, the last important chamber work of his career.
